In A Bear for Miguel, it is market day in Maria's hometown in El Salvador. This day will be a special treat. Maria and her teddy bear, Paco, can't wait to go to market with Papa to trade.
Mama worries that Papa and Maria will not be able to get everything the family needs. There is a guerrilla war being fought in El Salvador, and it is dangerous to work for either side, so they do not have money to buy goods. They have only a few things to trade: a chair, a tablecloth Mama has embroidered, some of Papa's old tools.
Maria wants to help Papa make a good trade. Papa says that she helps, because Maria and her little bear make him laugh. Maria knows that's not enough, but what can she and Paco do to help?
My family on my father's side comes from El Salvador. During the guerrilla war, my grandmother wrote me letters about what it was like to live with a war being fought all around you. My concern for her, and for my cousins and other family members still living in El Salvador, inspired me to write this book.
This is an I Can Read Book, for boys and girls who are learning to read by themselves.
