Louis Pasteur,
Davy Crockett
and John Paul Jonesby Elaine Marie Alphin Who knew history makers could be so fascinating - and so human? Find out about Louis Pasteur in Germ Hunter, about Davy Crockett (one of the launch titles in Lerner's new History Makers series), about John Paul Jones in I Have Not Yet Begun To Fight, and about President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
When Louis Pasteur was a boy, his teacher thought he wasn't very bright because he thought a long time before answering questions. But his teacher was wrong. Louis Pasteur was asking himself if there he couldn't come up with a better answer than the one in his school books. Louis went on to find out how to kill germs - in spite of the fact that many scientists of his time didn't even believe that germs existed!
Do you drink milk? Then you've probably heard of pasteurization. That's the process Louis Pasteur invented to keep milk free from germs over time. But that's not the only thing he did to keep kids healthy.
Louis lived in a time when a youngster who got bitten by a rabid dog or wolf almost always died. Convinced that some sort of germ was responsible, Louis spent much of his life battling rabies until his theories were put to the test when nine-year-old Joseph Meister was bitten and his family put his life in Louis Pasteur's hands.

Davy Crockett was a frontiersman who believed he could create himself. From the time he ran away from home to avoid going to school to the time he turned his back on the United States Congress to join the Texas struggle for independence at the Alamo, Davy Crockett never tired of making up tall tales about himself. He claimed he could wrestle a bear and whip his weight in alligators!
But the truth was that Davy Crockett could do much more. He believed that ordinary people deserved fair treatment from their government, and he carved out a home in the wild Tennessee frontier where he and his family could do just that. Then Davy Crockett went to Washington, D.C. as a Congressman to try to help ordinary Americans everywhere.
Was the real Davy Crockett a myth come to life, or just a tall tale? Read this biography and find out!
