In JELP, Javier has a terrific imagination, but he can't spell very well. Then he discovers a mysterious note at school:
Helq! Javier wonders who else in his class has trouble spelling. His mystery solving skills are really put to the test when the school starts its first ever Young Authors Contest.
How can Javier win first prize in the third grade and meet Mrs. Adelaide Weatherby, his favorite mystery writer?
The solution lies in solving the mystery of the purple note, and discovering how one dyslexic kid and one kid who learned to spell in Spanish can team up to be winners.
I've always loved to write, and I was lucky in school to be a pretty good speller. But I know that lots of kids have trouble spelling. One of my best friends is dyslexic, and she's written some wonderful books! She told me what it was like when she was in third grade and other kids made fun of her for her creative spelling. And my father came to America from El Salvador, like Javier's family, and had to learn English here. He went on to write and publish poetry - in English!
Clearly, imagination and success are not limited by spelling.
JELP is an Award Series Book, aimed for third grade readers.
