I enjoy speaking to fellow writers as well as to students. I have served on
the faculty of the Highlights Foundation Writer's Workshop at Chautauqua in New York, on the faculty of the Rice University Writers Conference in Houston, Texas, and on the faculty of the Harriette Austin Writer's Conference at the University of Georgia. I have also spoken to numerous groups of teachers and librarians about using children's books in the classroom.
I've served on the Advisory Council of the Indiana State Chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and I've participated on the faculty of numerous SCBWI conferences and workshops in Arkansas, Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas.
I served on the faculty of the Institute of Children's Literature, teaching both the introductory course in writing for children and teenagers, and the advanced course in writing for children's magazines. I also served as the Commentary columnist for Children's Writer for 10 years. I work with a number of writer's groups, and my book for writers, Creating Characters Kids Will Love, is published by Writer's Digest Books.
In addition to speaking to writers as part of a conference, I also offer two special writing programs:
- One-Day Workshop on Plot and Character Development for Novels and Short Stories
- Weekend Retreat to Plan the First Draft of Your Novel and Start Writing Now
